College Park Main Street

Orlando Main Street Program

The City of Orlando recognizes the important role neighborhood commercial districts play in the overall health of the City’s neighborhoods.

Sound neighborhood commercial areas contribute to a good quality of life. It can be a positive attraction and a competitive

advantage in retaining existing neighborhood residents and attracting new ones. To meet this need, the City of Orlando is offering business district revitalization support to Orlando neighborhood commercial districts.

Through the Orlando Main Street Program, districts are chosen using a competitive selection process. Each district receives financial and technical assistance and intensive training in the Main Street approach from Orlando Main Street and the National Main Street Center. In turn, each Main Street organization hires a full time Executive Director, raises matching funds, incorporates its organization and implements its programs according to an annual work plan.”

In March 2008, College Park was awarded a Main Street Program opportunity. We have been making many positive changes ever since!

Main Street Four-Point Approach™

The four point methodology works to create a total image for the community: Providing the retail/professional area with its necessary market niche, creating a cohesive visual identity unique to the community, and nurturing a cultural ambiance associated with the community's location, appearance, and way of life. The Main Street Approach gradually builds on existing resources and fosters improved community leadership and support on behalf of the Central Business District for the long term.

  • Organization is the building of consensus and cooperation between the groups that play a role in the Community. Many individuals and organizations in the community have a stake in the economic viability of the Community.
  • Design involves improving the Community's image by improving its physical appearance - not just the appearance of buildings, but also of street lights, window displays, parking areas, signs, sidewalks, street-scapes, landscaping, promotional materials and all other elements that convey a visual message about what the Community is and what it has to offer.
  • Promotion involves marketing the Community's unique characteristics to shoppers, investors, new businesses, tourists, and others. Effective promotion creates a positive image of the Community through retail promotional activity and special events, utilizing the Community as a stage area for activities.
  • Economic Development (Business Development) involves strengthening the existing economic base of the community while diversifying it. Economic Restructuring activities include helping existing businesses expand, recruiting new businesses, providing a balanced mix, converting unused space into productive property, and sharpening the competitiveness of merchants.
